Author bio: I’m Brandon Sanderson, and I specialise in science fiction, fantasy, and thrillers.
In November 2023, after the publication of three other Secret Projects that year (Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Mediaeval England, and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter), the fourth and final volume in the series that began with Skyward in 2018 (with its official title reveal coming in October 2023) will be released. All four of these publications were originally made available to contributors of the most successful Kickstarter project ever.
The seventh and final chapter of the Mistborn epic featuring Wax and Wayne, The Lost Metal, was published in November 2022. After the first arc of the Stormlight Archive is completed, the third period of Mistborn will be written.
Rhythm of War, the fourth colossal volume in the New York Times #1 bestselling Stormlight Archive series that began with The Way of Kings, and Dawnshard (book 3.5), a novella set in the same setting that fills in the gaps between the main releases, were both published that November in 2020. This is the kind of story I always hoped epic fantasy would be, and thus I’ve dedicated this series to the genre. In the autumn of 2024, you may expect to read Wind and Truth, the fifth volume.
The majority of my readers have picked up on the fact that the Cosmere, the universe of my adult fantasy works, is interconnected. Books like The Emperor’s Soul, winner of the 2013 Hugo Award, are among the many novellas and short stories that can be found on Amazon. The anthology Arcanum Unbounded came out in November of 2016 and collected all of the previously published Cosmere short stories. You should read that collection if you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and are interested in learning more about the writing process.
I also have three young adult series: The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), The Rithmatist (now at one book), and Skyward (currently at two books). My children’s book series, Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, will conclude in 2022 with the publication of its last installment, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians. My adult readers tend to start with Mistborn, but many of them have read and enjoyed all of my YA volumes.
Also, I have a couple other thriller/science fiction novellas. Legion, Perfect State, and Snapshot are just a few examples. Plenty of resources are available for use.
Books like “Mistborn,” “Skyward,” “Steelheart,” “The Emperor’s Soul,” and “Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians” are great places to begin. The Way of Kings is a great entry point if you enjoy epic fantasy of this type.
It was a great privilege of mine to use Robert Jordan’s notes to finish writing the final three books in The Wheel of Time, beginning with The Gathering Storm.

The Sunlit Man Book Summary
In order to paint a more complete image of the Cosmere, The Sunlit Man draws from several sources and adds its own. And this is the time to emphasise (again) that Sanderson has irrevocably altered the landscape of fantasy. Not by inspiring a slew of copycats like Tolkien did, but by showing that fantasy doesn’t have to rehash the same tired clichés but, on the contrary, may take the most audacious creative risks, resulting in wildly original settings. Neither a Scadrian spaceship nor a large quantity of Investiture is required to visit them.
Sanderson’s true identity as a science fiction author is revealed in The Sunlit Man. To be more accurate, Sanderson’s books are science fiction disguised as fantasy, while Star Wars is fantasy disguised as science fiction. When a character has, say, a burning jewel incrusted in his chest, you know that the jewel isn’t there just for striking imagery (something that starts losing its lustre when you’ve read too much fantasy, except maybe when the writer is Fritz Leiber), but rather because it serves a purpose in the story and the world you’ll be exploring.
