About the Hunger Games ePub
Could you make it through the night alone in the wilderness, when every living thing is working to ensure that you don’t make it to the next day?
Panem is a nation that is located in the ruins of what was formerly known as North America. It has a shining Capitol that is surrounded by twelve districts that are located in the surrounding area. The Capitol is a harsh and ruthless dictatorship that maintains order in the twelve districts it controls by compelling each of them to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to compete in the yearly Hunger Games, a battle to the death that is broadcast live on television.
When Katniss Everdeen, who is sixteen years old and lives with her mother and younger sister in a house all to themselves, volunteers to compete in the Hunger Games in place of her sister, she views this as a sentence to death. Katniss, on the other hand, is no stranger to the brink of death; in fact, she considers it second nature to survive. She doesn’t intend to compete, yet she finds herself in the running. Yet in order for her to emerge victorious, she will have to begin making decisions that pit her will to live against her concern for other people and her need to be loved.
About Suzanne Collins: The Author
Suzanne Collins’s career as a writer for children’s television began in 1991. She has been a staff member on various Nickelodeon shows, including the Emmy-nominated smash Clarissa Explains it All and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo. She wrote several episodes of Little Bear and Oswald, an animated series aimed at preschoolers, which was nominated for an Emmy. Moreover, she collaborated on the highly regarded Rankin/Bass holiday special Santa, Baby! Recently, she worked as the show’s head writer for Scholastic Entertainment’s Clifford’s Puppy Days.
She met children’s author James Proimos while working on the Kids WB show Generation O!, and he convinced her to try writing for young readers.
When she was a child, she read Alice in Wonderland, and she remembers thinking how strange the countryside in the book must have seemed to her because she grew up in the city. It’s more probable that you’ll fall through a manhole than a rabbit hole in New York City, and if you do, you won’t stumble across a tea party. And who knows what they might turn up… That’s the gist of Gregor the Overlander, the first volume of her five-volume The Underland Chronicles series. When Charlie McButton Lost Power, a rhyming picture book written by Suzanne and illustrated by Mike Lester, was also published.
She and her family recently moved to Connecticut from California to take in two strays they found in their backyard.
The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay are her most popular works among teenagers. The Georgia Peach Award is just one of many honours bestowed upon these novels.
The Hunger Games Book Summary
The First Chapter
In a devastating way, this opening chapter gets things rolling. Though we get to know a lot of people rapidly, we learn even more about Katniss Everdeen’s personality in a short amount of time. There are twelve districts in this story, and once a year, each district chooses two young people to compete in a game to the death that is also aired worldwide. After a teen’s name is added to the random selection pool, it stays there until they reach adulthood, at which point it is removed. It is common practise for children to append their names multiple times in order to get necessities for their families. Katniss’s name appears in the painting more than twenty times, whereas her sister Prim’s name appears only once because it is her first time. You know where this is heading though, right?
Chapter: 2
The moment Prim’s name is called, Katniss offers to go into the games in her stead. As for the male candidate, he is Peeta Mellark, whom Katniss recalls as the one who gave her bread when their family was starving after the death of their father. They are pushed together into a tournament from which no one expects them to survive. Especially because there can only be one winner, one of them will inevitably be sacrificed.
Chapter: 3
Katniss receives the mockingjay pin that will forever alter the course of her life.
Chapter: 4
Laughing, Haymitch punches Peeta to make him appear more rugged. And now Haymitch, in his role as mentor to these two kids, is ready to embark on a trip of his own.
Chapter: 5
My favourite character, Cinna, creates a fire dress for Katniss that the world has never seen. For the first time, no one will be able to forget Katniss or her name. They are trying to improve their public image, and Katniss has no idea that a public relationship between her and Peeta is already in the works. The President, Snow, is introduced, and we get a sense of the evil he has been stoking.
Chapter: 6
As Katniss and Peeta finally arrive at the training camp, they begin to learn about the other contenders from the various districts. It’s interesting to see how other districts operate and hear how some of the candidates consider running for office a privilege (without needing to save a little sister). Also, we get a glimpse of Rue, and at the end, you’ll want to reach into the book and shield her from harm.
Chapter: 7
With just an arrow and an apple, Katniss manages to make a strong impression on numerous high-ranking Capitol officials.
Chapter: 8
All of this is the seed that will grow into the Peeta vs Gale argument and the beginning of a highly contentious love triangle. My personal opinion is that Katniss’s inner monologue makes it quite clear that she has feelings for no one but Peeta, but I digress.
Chapter: 9
In this chapter, we are introduced to Caesar Flickerman and witness Katniss’ and Peeta’s contrasting interviews with him. Peeta is trained to play the role of the star-crossed lovers and admits to Caesar that Katniss is his one true love.
Chapter: 10
Part 2 now begins, and the fun can finally begin. Furthermore, Cinna delivers to Katniss my favourite line from the entire book. And yet, it’s so straightforward and lovely and tragic.
Chapter: 11
The twenty-four tributes are about to enter the arena, and if you’re courageous enough, you can make a break for the centre of the map, where a cornucopia full of weapons and supplies awaits. In the very beginning of the game, Peeta diverts Katniss’ attention away from the bow. As time goes on, people begin to band together in an effort to eliminate the weaker competitors.
Chapter: 12
Katniss is proving that she is determined to stay alive at whatever cost.
Chapter: 13
While Katniss is hiding out in a tree, she and Rue come up with a strategy in silence.
Chapter: 14
Someone, somewhere, is keeping an eye on her and pulling for her and her life; this person provides her with the medicine she requires. She finally manages to climb down from the tree with the assistance of some deadly genetically modified wasps, and then she purchases a bow.
Chapter: 15
Katniss and Rue work together on a grand scheme to make things more difficult for the districts working together to secure all the supplies.
Chapter: 16
It’s true; Katniss destroys the entire harvest.
Chapter: 17
Nevertheless, Rue is murdered by a spear while sending a mockingjay signal to reunite with Katniss. Katniss sings to her, and she understands that no matter how long she has left, her life will never be the same.
Chapter: 18
Katniss is doing her best to cope with her grief and loss, but she is also experiencing severe hearing loss in one ear. She is aware that Peeta was injured and has disappeared.
Chapter 19
Katniss is a hunter and tracker par excellence, and she swiftly locates Peeta near a watering hole. After they find safety, they kiss, and she promises that she will not let him die.
Chapter 20:
Beautiful foreshadowing of feeding Peeta berries can be found in this chapter.
Chapter: 21
Basically, at this stage in the game, all of the competitors have an urgent need for a specific item, so they return it to its original location in the centre of the map, and Katniss rushes to get it. Although she is severely hurt, she returns to help him. Katniss’s actions on behalf of Rue prompted Thresh to provide a hand.
Chapter: 22
Katniss and Peeta are the Capitol’s OTP, therefore they receive more care packages and Peeta takes good care of her.
Chapter: 23
Because I’m a sucker for Thresh, his death always hits me hard. The people of District 11 simply deserved better. The most dangerous and unpleasant person in the world, Cato, is still around. Another death related to berries occurs when a young woman does so after consuming them.
Chapter: 24
The producers of the 74th Hunger Games want the remaining three contestants—Katniss, Peeta, and Cato—to terminate the competition once and for all. Kato starts sprinting towards them, and the wolves chase after him.
Chapter: 25
Soon enough, we realise that the wolves are actually the victims of the games themselves. In any case, that’s what I’m guessing. They unmistakably possess the eyes of the tributes, which further adds to the creepiness. Kato is slowly dying at the hands of the wolves after some battling and monologues, but Katniss puts him out of his agony. The game’s creators have been trying to alter the rules directly in front of Katniss and Peeta, despite earlier assurances that they would both be spared if they reached the final two. Katniss gambles her precious berries and Peeta’s life on a showdown in which only one winner will be declared, while the rest of the country watches from the safety of their own homes, convinced that there can be only one.
Chapter: 26
But, since they must choose a victor, they conclude that having two winners is preferable to having none at all. Katniss awakes in a hospital with her body recovering and her hearing in her damaged ear restored. She’ll finally meet Cinna, and maybe their lives may return to normal. Katniss soon learns, however, that the Capitol is extremely displeased that she played with them and is not going to overlook her behaviour in the game.
Chapter: 27
At the winner’s interview, Katniss and Peeta are reunited and are subjected to watching all of the killings that occurred during the tournament. They’ve been harmed both physically and psychologically, and they know that Snow isn’t done causing trouble for them or the people they care about.
