Tahereh Mafi is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling novelist thanks to her Shatter Me series, which has become a phenomenon. Whenever you see her, she’s probably hopped up on caffeine and buried in a book. In addition, her first middle-grade novel, Shatter Me, is out in stores, and its darker sequel, Whichwood, will be out on November 14, 2017.
Synopsis of the Book: Shadow Me
The reader gets to know Kenji and his hilarious inner monologue, while also learning about the world and experiencing the events in Restore Me via his eyes, which is why this book is so great. I had a great time reading it, and I laughed out loud and gasped at the plethora of new knowledge, world constructing, and discussions we missed out on in Restore Me, but I still wouldn’t call it a high – rise book both between books 4 and 5 (these occurrences could have been decided to push into the completion of Restore Me because I truly think they explain fully the happenings than Warner and Juliette did).
My brain is a mushy, happy place because I adore Kenji and enjoyed this novella; I have a lot more to say about it, including interesting speculations and previously unknown facts, but I’ve been up reading this book since midnight, and it’s now 4:30 in the morning.
Conclusion
I like this better than “Restore me,” and it could have been used instead, despite its lack of narrative relevance.
My initial impression was that this novella predated Kenji’s Restore me. It turns out, though, that the two narratives are actually telling the same story at the same time from two distinct perspectives. I read it in its entirety with little difficulty because it was so concise and easy to understand.
I don’t think the author is doing a big service by trying to please her readers, therefore this will be a short review. It was just okay; I’m giving it three stars out of politeness. I hope that Defy Me will be able to salvage this story!
