Lily’s life hasn’t been without its challenges, but she’s never let that stop her from striving for the things she values. She has progressed far from her humble beginnings in a Maine mill town, having earned a college degree, relocating to Boston, and launching a successful business. When Lily meets and develops feelings for a handsome neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, her world seems to turn upside down.
Ryle is confident in himself and his abilities, even to the point of arrogance. Additionally, he is sympathetic, bright, and completely smitten with Lily. The fact that he looks good in scrubs doesn’t hurt, either. Lily just can’t seem to stop thinking about him. Ryle’s aversion to all interpersonal contact, however, is deeply unsettling. Lily wonders what turned him into a “no dating” guy in the first place, even as she finds herself becoming the exception to his rule.
As she struggles to find answers to her new relationship’s many uncertainties, she can’t help but reflect on Atlas Corrigan, her first love and a tether to the past she tried so hard to leave behind. She felt safe with him since he was just like her. When Atlas unexpectedly reappears, it threatens all Lily and Ryle have worked for.

It Ends with Us Book summary
Lily, a young woman in her early twenties, has had a tough go of it throughout IEWU. She may have come from a privileged background, but she has always had to fight for the things she wanted. She packs up after graduation and heads to Boston in search of entrepreneurial success. There she meets and falls in love with Ryle, a successful neurosurgeon who is driven to achieve excellence. The chemistry between them is off the charts, and it seems like things are too wonderful to be true.
Ryle is the antithesis of Lily in every way. He is bold and unyielding in his convictions. Similar to Lily, he is powerful, enthusiastic, and driven. Despite the obvious chemistry between them, they’ve opted to take things slow in getting to know one another. What a well written protagonist Lily is. It was wonderful to watch her develop and develop alongside me. I found it fascinating to learn about her mental processes. When I first started reading, I thought I wasn’t going to appreciate the part when she writes in her journal entries as though they were letters to Ellen DeGeneres.
Although I thought “this is a little cheesy” after the first few, I eventually came to really like them. They were the missing link between Lily’s history and present. As Lily and Ryle’s friendship develops, she begins to reflect on her past loves, particularly Atlas. Atlas was the defining experience of her life up to that point. The boy named Atlas who stayed in the vacant house next door. When they were teenagers, Atlas and Lily became friends.
Having an unbreakable bond and sharing everything together. They were soul mates, sharing every waking minute and many stolen ones. Everything Lily and Ryle have is in danger when Atlas returns. (This is by no means a spoiler; he obviously does). Ryle and Atlas both add substantial, unique elements to the narrative. CoHo succeeds, I think, in creating characters who are so different from one another but still complementing one another.Everyone in the novel, from the protagonist to the minor characters, is believable and genuine.
Everything I desired in a New Adult novel was present. It has all the hallmarks of vintage CoHo, but also ventures into territory she hasn’t explored before, and she does it with aplomb. She skillfully interweaves these sombre passages with lighter ones that will have you swooning, laughing, and then crying. The author’s note was the highlight of this book for me. This author’s remark, which would normally appear at the opening of the story, was moved to the end because of its critical nature. It elevated a solid novel to the level of literary masterpiece. This letter moved me in a way that very few novels have. I cried harder reading that than I did the entire book or anything else by Colleen Hoover.
You’ll be shocked to learn how meaningful it was for her to write this book, but I hope she appreciates the value of reading as much as she values writing. Understanding the creative process behind a work of fiction can completely alter one’s impression of it; for me, that realisation came after finishing this book.
Colleen Hoover, your writing is an ongoing gift to the world of literature; thank you.
