I’m not going to lie and say I didn’t consider putting this book down after the first chapter. The chapter concluded with one of my top three least favourite tropes, and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to cope with it. Spoilers! Otherwise, I’d elaborate.
But I kept going, and now I’m glad I didn’t give up on it. There are many positive aspects to this gloomy/cheerful love story. Although they are polar opposites, Sierra and Gryphon share some of the same emotional baggage and shared upbringing. Gryphon is an extremely reserved person who goes to great lengths to conceal the fact that his famous producer father and supermodel mother are related to him. Not only has he been hurt in the past by individuals who only cared about him for his connections, but he has also been tarnished by affiliation with his parents’ less-than-respectable behaviour.
Meanwhile, Sierra is struggling to overcome her ex-husband’s persistence in trying to reconcile with her. Because of his extreme stalkerish actions, Gryphon has decided to move in with Sierra. You’ve got to love the close quarters.
Gryphon, despite his guilt for his parents and his bad temper, visits his mum on Mother’s Day. He attends his father’s zany celebration of his birthday. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that he supports Sierra in every significant manner. Even though there were times when I wanted to smack him, he is a good, trustworthy person.
Sierra’s sunny disposition is remarkable given the family turbulence that should have made her bitter and distant. She takes her business seriously but never takes herself too seriously, even if she makes sex toys for a living. She’s the type to give individuals and circumstances the benefit of the doubt despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
