Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj also known as Sri Siddharameshwar Guru was a master in the Inchagiri Sampradaya, a part of the Navnath Sampradaya, the ‘Nine Masters’ tradition in India, created by his master Bhausaheb Maharaj. Nisargadatta Maharaj, Ranjit Maharaj, Kaadsiddheshwar, and Ganapatrao Maharaj Kannur were among his disciples.
Siddharameshwar was born in the Indian village of Pathri in the year 1888. He had always been bright and had excellent mental abilities since he was a toddler. Inchagiri, Karnataka, India, in 1906, he was initiated by his teacher, ‘Shri Bhausaheb Maharaj,’ who taught mantra meditation as a path to Final Reality. He was one of Sri Ramana Maharshi’s contemporaries.
Six years after Bhauhaseb maharaj’s death, in 1920, Siddharameshwar embarked on “the Bird’s Path,” the quickest path to realisation. His classmates were against him, but he eventually succeeded on his own.
At the age of 48, Siddharameshwar died on November 9, 1936 (Ekadashi, 11th day of the later half of Ashwin), giving his understanding to his pupils. Hundreds of his pupils are believed to have attained self-realization as a result of his straightforward and lucid teaching. His samadhi temple is now located in Vijaypur, Karnataka, in Basavan Bagewadi.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj Teachings
Following are the Teachings of Siddharameshwar Maharaj Guru.
Atma Vidya
The major focus of Siddharameshwar Maharaj’s teachings is Atma Vidya (“Self-Knowledge”). In his book Master Key to Self-Realization, he explains how Vedanta teachings are passed down to students. It all begins with a meeting with a guru who explains the teachings. After that, the student uses a mantra to meditate and make the mind more receptive. The guru then elaborates on the teaching, which the learner must experience firsthand.
The student must “turn within” and turn away from external items and the gross body. It is possible to cultivate detachment and a mental attitude free of pride by comprehending that objects have only a fleeting appearance. This is a vital stage in the development of Self-Knowledge, as well as the rejection of the transient and acceptance of the eternal.
The koshas
To comprehend this Self-Knowledge, a study of the four bodies is required to determine where the concept of “I” originates. Four bodies are discerned by Siddharameshwar Maharaj:
- The Gross Physical Body
- The Five Senses of Action: The Subtle Body (hands, feet, mouth, genitals, and anus)
- Knowledge in Five Senses (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin)
- the five vital breaths (pranas) (vyana vayu, samana vayu, udana vayu, apana vaya, prana vayu)
- the Human Mind (manas)
- Intelligence (Buddhi)
- “Emptiness,” “ignorance,” and “darkness” describe the Causal Body.
- The Great-Causal Body, the unfathomable awareness of “I am,” the state between ignorance and knowledge, or Turiya state
- The experience of “I am” above knowledge and ignorance is clearly established by identifying with the three lower bodies, analysing them, and dismissing association with them when it becomes evident that they are not the “I.”
The Way of the Bird
In contrast to Bhausaheb Maharaj’s teachings, which have been dubbed Pipilika Marg, “the Ant’s Way,” the direct path to Self-discovery, Siddharameshwar’s teachings have been dubbed Vihangam Marg, “the Bird’s Way,” the direct path to Self-discovery:
Siddharameshwar’s teachings in his own Words
There are two ways to realise: the bird’s way and the ant’s way. One can realise through meditation (or the ant’s technique). The power of a word or a name is immense. Your parents gave you a name that has served you well in many ways. The teacher gives the mantra, but understanding it takes a long time. You can reach the last reality by chanting or repeating the mantra. There are only two things that exist: reality and illusion. Only one phrase can dispel delusion.
So all it takes is one thought [mantra] from the Master who has realised to realise. The only thing is that it is a very long journey. So, by pondering, my Master discovered the fastest route. Why not? You became the smallest creature by not thinking, and you can become the greatest of the great by thinking. If you don’t have the mental capacity to understand by thinking like a bird, you can use meditation. It’s a long journey, and you’ll need to meditate for several hours each day. People claim to meditate, yet most have no idea how to do it. The dualism is defined as God being one and myself being another. That will never be the case.
As a result, the Master only needs to say one thing. In a fraction of a second, words can cut words, and ideas can cut thoughts. It has the ability to transport you beyond the words to your true self. You must eventually immerse your ego, the meditator, the meditation action, and finally yourself in meditation. It’s a lengthy journey, and in today’s society, few individuals have the time to make it. The world is now moving at such a breakneck speed. As a result, my Master discovered the shortest route.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj Quotes
Our own confusion or misunderstanding is what prevents or presses us at all times and in varied forms. There is no other kind of distortion.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj Quote
Desirelessness entails letting go of something that will eventually vanish.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj
Attempts to give up pride for the sake of the body should be made as frequently as possible. Remember that the astonishing and rare can only be achieved by doing something unique and different from what others are doing.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj
You have the authority to declare Illusion a myth and prove that it is untrue. Maya created something, and because of this creative force, if you want to make something after Liberation, you can. Because the world is imagined, we can change it with our imagination.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj Teachings
Never lose sight of the fact that you are formless, pure, and pristine. You must maintain a level of contentment that is unaffected by everything.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj Quote
To achieve ‘The Absolute Truth,’ one must shift one’s mental attention from ‘Illusion to Reality.’ Paramartha, The Absolute Truth, has been forgotten by you. You should concentrate your thoughts on IT. Illusion is a thing of the past. All that is required is for one to see that the world is ‘untrue.’ It should be viewed as a “dream world kingdom.” Even if you achieve Indra’s rank of “Lord Of Heaven And Prosperity,” it is still fake.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj Quote
The road of Knowledge should be grasped with tremendous dexterity. Desires might be obstructive or not. They are not impediments for someone who receives them when they do not greatly enjoy or desire them. Those who have strong likes and dislikes, as well as cravings, and eventually develop desires, are displaced from their True Nature (Swaroopa). This is how one thinks of themselves as an individual (jiva), and therefore is robbed of the bliss of their true nature.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj Quote
Allow someone to call you the lowest of names, yet know that you are God, and watch what happens. Once the inner judge has decided that you are God, that decision will not be reversed. It’s as simple as that. Then you’ve truly evolved into Paramatman.
Sri Samartha Siddharameshwar Maharaj
Keep in mind the Sadguru. This should be done every day, morning, noon, and night. “I am Brahman,” “I am Shiva,” and “I am He,” remember. Remembering should be as continuous as the ticking of a clock. The dynamic, living temple is the heart in which Devotion to God is constant. The name Rama has the power to liberate everyone. By repeating the sacred name of Rama, Lord Mahadev (Shiva) was able to free himself from the sense objects.
Sri Samartha Siddharameshwar Maharaj
Brahman has no sense of self-importance. As a result, all pride in any experience or accomplishment is useless. It could even be a magnificent good deed that the doer believes he has accomplished, but Brahman will not touch or respect it.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj Quotes
Your thinking about what is vital and non-essential is the dream within the dream, and when you know that you are the Self, Atman, you have this experience. You had the impression that the world was deceptive. You had the sensation that you were awake and in your waking state. You had the impression that you had gained ‘experience,’ yet your confusion, your illusion, remained the same. In the dream, you’re still talking about stuff. When full awakening occurs, every feeling of ‘being’ vanishes. Even the belief that you are the Self vanishes.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj
There should not be any notion of ‘I am the doer,’ ‘I have done,’ ‘I do,’ and so on.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj Guru
There is a game of lunacy, and it has been decreed that you must continue to play it, win or lose, pleasure or agony, and you must continue to experience it. It’s called pleasure, but it has to be put down. People keep up the imagining, which is actually just pain, but there is real satisfaction in killing the enjoyment. It’s a good thing you’ve eliminated the fun. The destroyer of pleasure, on the other hand, must perish.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj
The beginning of the darkness occurs when attention is drawn away from the Self and toward objects. That’s the deception. That is the state of mind.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj
One who has a persistent desire for sense objects becomes lost in them, while one who meditates on the Self (Atman) becomes the Self. ‘I’ll focus on God later,’ don’t say. I’ll do that when I have more time.’ You should meditate, think, and let your mind wander to the Self with great affection for it on a regular basis.
Guru Siddharameshwar Maharaj
Beingness translates to ‘Knowledge’ or ‘Consciousness.’ Bondage is the state of mind when it is preoccupied with something else. When the mind is free of distractions, it is Brahman. The mind is clean and still when it is not thinking about objects in it. That is the Brahman state.
Siddharameshwar Maharaj
Temporal life, also known as worldliness, refers to an attempt to make oneself happy at the expense and sacrifice of others, while being completely unconcerned with the welfare and misery of others. Your inherent happiness does not require any effort or methods on your part. Only transitory happiness can be found in temporary things. Because it is eternal, knowing the Self brings Eternal delight to all. There is limitless anguish in the worldly, yet boundless and unsurpassed Eternal delight exists in the Self.
