Before a demon murdered Bryce Quinlan’s closest friends and left her devastated, injured, and alone, she had the perfect life: working hard by day and partying hard by night. Bryce becomes central to the inquiry once the accused is incarcerated but the crimes resume. To avenge their deaths, she will resort to any means necessary.
Fallen angel Hunt Athalar is famous for his failed coup against the Archangels and subsequent servitude to them. His extraordinary power and severe training are dedicated solely to eliminating any potential threats to his boss. But now that a demon is terrorising the city, he has been offered a deal he can’t refuse: locate the killer and you’ll be free.
As Bryce and Hunt go deeper into Crescent City’s underbelly, they find a dark force that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, as well as a fiery passion in each other that, if they allow it, may set them both free.
The first book in a brilliantly imaginative new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses explores the pain of loss, the cost of freedom, and the strength of love through the eyes of unique characters and a romance that will have readers turning pages long into the night.

House of Earth and Blood Book Summary
I’m just dropping in to confirm that, in the year 2021, I did, in fact, appreciate a Sarah J. Maas novel. As the first book in a new adult fantasy series, I like to describe House of Earth and Blood as “unsolved crime meets a fantasy world, and the two unlikely allies teamed up to solve it.” Half-fae Bryce Quinlan’s life was shattered when, upon arriving home one evening, she learned of the brutal killings of her friend Danika and her pack. The investigation has been cold for two years, but Bryce is still determined to see justice done for her friends’ murders.
She is now required to assist an enslaved angel named Hunt Athalar, whose punishment would be eased if he works by her side. The truth about what happened all those years ago, something that threatens their very existence and the values they hold dear, will be revealed to them by working together.
In my opinion, this is Sarah J. Maas’s finest hour as an author. As a reader who had a lot of trouble getting through her previous works, I can attest to the remarkable improvement made in this series. Being classified as an adult fantasy provided her greater leeway to express herself freely in this latest effort. Readers of Crescent City will be rewarded handsomely if they take the time to fully immerse themselves in the universe and the fantastic personalities presented therein. I was instantly struck by how much effort went into establishing the background for the pivotal events in the story. It’s obvious that a lot of thought went into the arrangement of these significant pieces; many of them sailed right over my head until they were needed in the final chapters. Like a beautiful domino sequence that was painstakingly set up only to fall with devastating grace.
In terms of the romantic elements, they really beyond my expectations. Reluctant partners who work together to solve a mystery but end up falling hopelessly in love with one another are one of my favourite plot devices. This provided me all that and more. There’s something quite moving about how Bryce and Hunt go from reluctantly working together to ultimately helping each other find peace and closure. Surprisingly, these two were one of the highlights of the book for me. I can’t wait till November, when we can finally get back to this series after that cliffhanger. Keep the Ruhn material coming.
