Eve and the crew are dispatched to the scene of a murder when the body of a retired police officer is discovered in his home. The deceased is former Captain of Internal Affairs Martin Greenleaf. Eve suspects there is more to this perfectly staged scene than meets the eye, but everyone else is convinced it’s a suicide.

Beginning of the Plot
A homicide policeman named Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her ex-con husband Roarke celebrate their third wedding anniversary in Ireland in the year 2061. The sun has been abducted or slain, making extra time for rest, sexual activity, alcoholic beverages, sunbathing, and other leisure activities. Roarke was relieved to see the fields and stone walls of Ireland shining green despite the heavy clouds and rain with which they had come.
From her window, Eve could see out towards Roarke’s family property in Clare, where she had first met Roarke’s mother’s twin, Sinead Brody Lannigan. She was delighted to see her loved ones, knowing how much it would mean to them. Sean, Roarke’s grandson, greeted Eve warmly and offered to assist with the luggage. Sinead, a redhead with a sleek tail, contacted her cousin Eve and told her to quit being so annoying.
After a time of holding hands, Eve hugged Roarke and Roarke returned the gesture. They had enough strong guys on hand to get them inside and up to Eve’s chamber. Inside, the gathering of family members was met with joy and anticipation. Sinead wanted to give Eve a present, but she didn’t want to do it in secret.
In the midst of the chaos, Eve sat with her long-legged police officer and her husband. She had built a successful career advocating on behalf of the departed, and she was now settled with her family in an Irish farmhouse. After a brief toast from Roarke, she also lifted her glass.
In conclusion, after three years of marriage, Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Roarke celebrate in Ireland with close friends and family. The significance of family is emphasised, as is the need of speaking out for the departed.

Payback in Death by J. D. Robb (a pseudonym for Nora Roberts) is a page-turner for all the wrong reasons. The protagonist, Lieutenant Eve Dallas of the New York City (NYC) Homicide Police Department, and the story take place in 2061 during the summer. Dallas and her husband Roarke had returned from a three-week vacation. Dallas is called to the scene of the death of a retired captain from the internal affairs police before they have even unpacked. Should we assume foul play?
It’s always fun to hang out with Dallas, Roarke, Eve’s partner Delia Peabody, and the rest of Eve’s coworkers. All of the primary characters are interesting and well-developed. She is trustworthy, has high moral standards, and feels a feeling of responsibility for victims and their loved ones. Reading the books in order will help you understand the motivations behind Eve’s consistent theme of wanting to serve and protect. Eve and Roarke’s conversations are usually entertaining and reveal new dimensions to Eve’s character. Roarke is intriguing, generous, and complicated, but he also has his annoying moments. Delia’s gradual assumption of greater leadership roles was another highlight. Moreover, Detective Jenkinson has a larger part in this novel. Peabody and her boyfriend, McNab, let the readers in on some of their personal lives.
The writing is smooth and interesting. The plot is complex, interesting, and heartbreaking. Robb generally manages to incorporate humour into her novels, making light of some of the story’s darker moments, but this one lacked the humour of her other works. The author imbues the series with compelling protagonists, compelling stories, endearing relationships, and brisk pacing. The themes of friendship, relationships, ego, careers, leadership, love, respect, and trust, as well as many others, are woven throughout the narrative.
Robb is a master storyteller who skillfully weaves together an original tale with tense moments and even some exciting sequences. There are a lot of possible suspects, and the writing is smooth. The story revolves around Dallas and her interactions with her coworkers and friends as much as it does the investigation. The mystery, detective work, romance, and unexpected turns are all well-balanced. The novel ends on a passionate note.
In sum, I found this story to be a page-turner because of its intriguing plot and well-developed characters. I highly suggest this series to anyone who likes police procedurals set in the near future. I have read every single one of the fifty-seven books in the In Death series by Eve Dallas. I need to get my hands on the next book in this series immediately.
