Kenna Rowan, who spent five years in prison for a terrible error, has returned to the small hamlet where everything went wrong in the hopes of finding her 4-year-old daughter. But it’s hard to repair the ties that Kenna’s fire destroyed. No matter how hard Kenna tries to prove herself, She won’t be accepted by anyone in her daughter’s life. Local bar owner Ledger Ward is one of the few people who still talks to Kenna’s daughter. Beginning of the Plot
The narrator chooses to take a crucifix from the roadside since it has the date of his own death carved into the wood. During the pretrial, he avoids the prosecutor’s specifics and enters a guilty plea, certain that his inactivity was what ultimately resulted in Scotty’s death. His new place is just two miles from the centre of town, so he decides to make the move. He resolves to look for work despite the potential for negative karma.
The narrator comes upon a freestanding unit consisting of a car lot and a convenience shop that have both been abandoned, and he feels compelled to take down the tribute to Scotty. He departs the taxi after paying for the crucifix and tipping the driver. He moves into a single-family home with an irritated lady who gives him a cat as a welcome gift. If he takes a cat, she’ll leave the power on for two weeks, but the narrator declines. She then tells him that he can keep the power on for the whole month if he takes only one cat.
The narrator has doubts about staying in the town that contains all the individuals originally tied to Scotty, but ultimately chooses to do so. There was a lady who offered to bring the narrator a kitten, but he politely declined. She said that numerous kittens would be worth avoiding having to pay a $250 power deposit this month.
A young lady named Ruth comes home with a little black-and-orange cat. She begs Ruth for assistance and opens up about how she saved over $2,000 in 2005 to buy a pay phone. Ruth and her husband, hearing the kitten’s distress meow, decide to remain in their new home. The flat is tiny; the living room, kitchen and dining area are all similarly compact. A closet and a tiny bathroom are the only amenities in this efficiency flat. Ruth, aged 26 years, has shared a shelter with six other people. This is her first experience with living alone, which is both scary and freeing for her. Ruth doubts she can afford the flat, but she wants to move out nonetheless so she can show herself. Ruth, who takes naming things very seriously, has given the cat the name Diem. She gave herself the name Diem because she intended to track her down after her release.

After reading so many of Hoover’s works, you might assume that I’d be more equipped. Keep a box of tissues close at hand, for starters. Second, keep it hidden from public view. But I still haven’t figured it out. This time I was sitting in the waiting area of a doctor’s office when I was hit with a wave of emotion. I pretended it was allergies when really it was just me breaking down in tears.
Kenna has recently been freed from jail where she was incarcerated following a life-changing accident. She goes back to the place where everything went wrong in an effort to find her long-lost daughter. But the town isn’t exactly eager to have her back after an old dispute. Ledger, proprietor of the local pub, has his own ties to her past and may be her sole ally.
This is one powerful read. Reading about Kenna’s separation from her daughter was especially traumatic and upsetting for me at this time. To be really forthright, I struggled not to cry throughout the majority of it. Another aspect that resonated with me was Kenna’s desire for redemption after serving her sentence. Still, it warms my heart whenever I come across a work of writing that addresses this vital issue.
There are several angles from which to view this situation. There is no black or white, only shades of grey in between. A lot of people might have strong opinions about whether Kenna’s condition is too harsh or too lenient, and that wouldn’t surprise me. I also wouldn’t be shocked if some of the same readers fell into both categories. This is the kind of story that teeters precariously, pulling at your emotions in opposite directions.
The tale seemed to move at an unusually slow pace, which is my only complaint. The story stalled in the middle and didn’t go forward nearly as much as it should have. And then, unexpectedly, without any of the foreshadowed resistance, the ending is reached. After the epic voyage we just finished, the ending seemed too quick.
Even so, Colleen Hoover always produces readable novels, and this one is no exception. Despite the obvious emotional investment she makes in them, I’m never compelled to look away. I really need to keep reading on. I hope to experience her emotional torture for me. That’s what sets her writing apart.
