Counting the Cost Book Summary
I listened to it in its entirety in a single sitting. It was both moving and heartbreaking since Jill reveals some painful truths about her relationship with her father. In my opinion, she handled it really gracefully. She was quite discreet among her siblings. Despite exposing her father’s transgressions against her, she was quick to point out the positive in her parents and express her gratitude to her mother.
She was forthright in her account. I listened to her self-narrated Audible version. Even if she isn’t a great reader, hearing it read by her gave me chills. That’s probably what she was going for when she wrote this book: the chance to write whatever she wanted. She is untangling truth from cultish legalism, but she finds that it is intimately bound up with her family bonds. Her sacrifices for truth and justice are real.
She apparently became weary of pretending to be the outcast in her family and holding secrets for which her father showed no remorse. That’s a lot of responsibility to shoulder when you and your 17 siblings don’t know how your father’s choices have made it difficult for any of you to strike off on your own.
It was difficult for me to decide how I felt about this book. It was without a doubt an intriguing read. If you have ever been interested in the Duggars, whether in the past or present, allow Jill to tell you her story.
