In 1932 Shanghai, winter is setting in just as the looming fear of a Japanese invasion grows.
The worst thing that could have happened to national spy Rosalind Lang has happened to her. Since Orion was kidnapped and his memories of Rosalind erased, the notorious Lady Fortune has not left her bedroom in weeks while the media storm has camped outside her flat. Even if their marriage was a fake, her loss is more painful than any physical harm. She won’t stop searching for him until she finds him.
But now that her true identity is out, it will be extremely difficult to accomplish. Leaving the city under the cover of a national tour is the only option to escape and rescue Orion. Her superiors are easily persuaded by her argument that rural areas want togetherness more than ever, and that an eternal girl is the best person to instill a sense of pride and power in the populace.
When the tour goes awry, however, Rosalind’s entire worldview is turned upside down. When people flee Shanghai for safer territory, long-buried spirits emerge from the shadows and enemies become comrades. Time is of the essence, and if Rosalind fails, she will lose not just Orion but her homeland as well. They need to find a cure for Orion’s mother’s treasonous invention and remove this terrible chemical weapon from the hands of an imminent foreign invasion.

Chloe Gong is the author of the critically acclaimed Secret Shanghai novels and the Flesh and False Gods trilogy, all of which have been published by the New York Times. Her works have been included in publications as diverse as The New York Times, People, and Forbes, and have been translated into more than twenty languages. She just graduated with a double major in English and international relations from Penn. Chloe, who was born in Shanghai but grew up in Auckland, New Zealand, has moved to New York City and is passing herself off as an adult.
Foul Heart Huntsman Book Summary
Characters, not story, were the focus of Foul Heart Huntsman. There was a massive ensemble. Rosalind, Orion, Celia, Oliver, Phoebe, Silas, Alisa, and a few others (no spoilers, right?) were among the cast we kept tabs on. Moreover, despite the book’s length (almost 500 pages), it did not feel like enough time was spent on each character for us to have a good sense of who they were and what they went through. It was disorienting to jump from one character to another in an entirely new environment. I almost never have this opinion on a book that’s over 500 pages long, but I wish it had been longer.
Despite this, I was really fond of Rosalind’s growth. Before reading the second book in the These Violent Delights series, I did not like her at all. Despite all that she has been through—pain, manipulation, harm, lies, and betrayal—she continues to do the right thing and defend her loved ones. This book served as her closure and her path to recovery. I liked how things worked out for her character.
However, the supporting cast was excellent. Alisa and Phoebe were two of my favourite people ever. Phoebe’s actual colours emerge at various points in the novel, and it’s a lot of fun to see her do so because so many people in the story fail to recognise her for who she really is. Plus Alisa. I adore her because she is clever, funny, and sassy. And Oliver was one of my favourites. His complexity outweighed my initial impression. Despite a pleasant scene near the end involving Silas and Phoebe, Celia and her husband didn’t hold any interest for me. Jiemin was another favourite character of mine, and I longed for him to play a larger role in the narrative.
Conclusion
Moving on, I think I can sum up partnerships with just two words: self-absorbed to an intolerable degree. Look, I love romance novels. However, the blurb for this book promises a thrilling adventure. I thought there was just too much mushy stuff overall. In contrast to the first book, which I praised for its excellent balance of romance and narrative, this one fell short. The romantic interludes started off sweet (if unrealistic), but they became old fast. There was a disturbing sameness to all of the couples. Each of the protagonists has her own version of the perfect guy, witty dialogue, and cute moniker (a la “Dorogaya” from These Violent Delights, but worse). But I will admit that Oliver and Celia’s relationship was one of the few I actually enjoyed (mainly because I have grown to admire Oliver). They were adorable, though I wonder how often people genuinely address their significant others as “Sweetheart” in conversation.
I never thought I’d say this, but I think the moments with Orion and Rosalind were too fluffy. Real anxiety was required. Even though they were spies and assassins, despite their phoney marriage and hidden identities, they still managed to fall in love with one another in the first novel. It was lovely to watch their relationship develop from hostile to friendly to romantic. At other moments, however, it felt completely unrealistic in this book. And this criticism is coming from someone who genuinely likes them.Despite all of their shortcomings, I continue to love them. Their relationship is portrayed as a metaphor in the song “Daylight” by Taylor Swift.
