He is conceited, jaded, and overbearing. I should know better. By some stroke of luck, he’s now my superior. However, that won’t prevent me from investigating the circumstances surrounding his final declaration of love. A love letter where the ending doesn’t have a happy ending.
That tale, though, pales in comparison to the one that is being written between us. Things are heating up, sweetening up, and shocking me in ways I never thought possible.

Hate Notes Book Summary
As a test, I listened to some Hate Notes. I was immediately interested when I heard about it because this writing team has created some of my favourite read/listens. I was hesitant after reading the summary and some reviews. And I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy this plot. It helps if you’re in the mood for a douchewaffle hero, for one thing. You also need to be in the correct headspace to deal with protagonists who are heartbroken or on the rebound. I set down Hate Notes, but its light shone brightly through the other books’ covers and remained on my radar for quite some time.
Then it hit me: maybe I should just listen and not read. This realisation was aided by the book going on sale, but it was still helpful. When I listen to something instead of read it, I feel a little more detached. For me, it’s very much like watching a movie. When viewing a movie, I don’t try to place myself in the characters’ situations, but when reading, I always do. With Sebastian York’s smooth voice whispering in my ear, I figured listening would be the best method to test it out.
To put it simply, I had a fantastic time. Yes, I had some “issues,” but being away from Charlotte even temporarily helped immensely. Truthfully, Charlotte first irritated the hell out of me. She was little intrusive, critical, and unpleasant. I assume she was going for eccentric and interesting, but I just didn’t find her that interesting. I came to appreciate her bubbly personality after she calmed down a bit. Her resolve to discover who she was impressed me.
Reed, oh how I liked this chap, yet it could have been the cover girl or Mr. York’s reassuring voice. He was probably harsh, arrogant, and a complete douchewaffle to the average reader, but to me he was just a guy trying to make sense of life. As our relationship progressed, I found myself growing fond of him. He wasn’t always the nicest guy, but that was because of the context in which he found himself.
Conclusion
The plot was excellent, and I especially liked Reed’s manipulative grandma. I didn’t mind waiting until far later in the novel for the sensual parts. All the buried pain had to be addressed before they could finally be together.
Thank goodness I didn’t just read ahead, but waited and listened instead. The narration is superb, and I was completely engrossed throughout. I have no doubt that I will be reading more by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward in the near future.
