Sheela Birnstiel (born 28 December 1949 in India also known as Sheela Ambalal Patel) is an Indian-born Swiss who was the spokesman for the Rajneesh movement (aka Osho movement). For her role in the 1984 Rajneeshee bioterror incident, she pled guilty to attempted murder and assault in 1986.

She oversaw the Rajneeshpuram ashram in Wasco County, Oregon, as the secretary of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh from 1981 to 1985. For her role in the 1984 Rajneeshee bioterror incident, she pled guilty to attempted murder and assault in 1986. She was given a 20-year federal prison sentence and was released after 39 months. Sheela later married and went to Switzerland, where she bought two nursing facilities. In 1999, a Swiss court found her guilty of “criminal conduct preparatory to the commission of murder” in connection with the 1985 plan to assassinate US federal prosecutor Charles Turner.
“Sheela told him during a trip to India that they took in 1985, that she had injected her first husband [Marc Harris Silverman] with an injection that caused his death,” David Berry Knapp, aka Swami Krishna Deva, former mayor of Rajneeshpuram, told the FBI in his evidence. Sheela married Urs Birnstiel, a Swiss citizen, after her release from prison. Urs Birnstiel died of AIDS shortly after their marriage.
Rajneesh hired her as his personal secretary in 1981. She persuaded Rajneesh to leave India and start an ashram in the United States the same year. The 64,000-acre (260 km2) Big Muddy Ranch in Wasco County, Oregon, was purchased by Rajneesh Foundation International in July 1981, and it became the site for the development of the Rajneeshpuram commune. She became the president of Rajneesh Foundation International, oversaw the commune, and met with Rajneesh on a daily basis to talk business. Rajneesh was complicit in and directed Sheela’s involvement in criminal crimes she and a gang of Rajneeshees performed afterwards, according to Sheela.

“There was no exploitation of sexuality in our commune in Pune or in Rajneeshpuram,” Ma Anand Sheela replied when asked about the style of life inside Osho’s utopian communes (in both Pune and Rajneeshpuram in Oregon, USA). We had an open discussion regarding sexuality. It’s similar to how you express your desire to someone when you’re attracted to them.” She emphasised that, contrary to what viewers may have assumed after watching the Netflix series, there was never any sexual misconduct. “Not only me, but I think everyone believes in it subconsciously,” she remarked when asked if she believed in Osho’s teachings of free sex. They want to be free from their relationships and have fun.”
