Not My Romeo is the first book in a fresh new series written by Ilsa Madden-Mills. It is the epitome of romantic comedy at its finest. I truly can’t believe I almost didn’t pick up this book; the sheer chuckles, combined with Elena and Romeo, make this novel practically ideal in every way!
What could possibly go wrong on Valentine’s Day with a random date? Elena is a sweet librarian who designs sexy lingerie, and Greg is a gorgeous weatherman. They were both persuaded to go on a blind date together. What ends up happening is that Elena ends up with Jack Hyde, a star football player who has a more reserved side.
Jack Hyde has not the foggiest notion who the girl is that has just sat down at his table; yet, he is certain that this teeny-tiny and odd-looking girl is not your typical girl. To begin, she is completely unaware of who he is, and he believes that this presents an opportunity for him. After dinner and few drinks, the night escalates into a wild night of sex. The following morning, Jack is unable to just go without first informing her of who he is; instead, he writes her a note and places it on the pillow before leaving. That should be sufficient to accomplish the goal, right?
The author did an incredible job of weaving a plot throughout this book, and the end result was nothing short of flawless. You didn’t really need it, but Elena and her family’s dynamic in the small town of Daisy was such a wonderful added bonus that it made the experience that much more delightful for you. The back and forth between Jack and Elena was, on occasion, so entertaining that it was impossible not to laugh out loud.
If I like the book as much as I say I did, then you might be wondering why I only gave it four stars out of five.When Jack overheard a conversation that was only happening from one person’s perspective, he acted like a complete and absolute jerk, and while that certainly has the potential to make a tale, in this instance, it worked against the story for me. It might have been different if it had happened earlier in the novel; however, since it occurred right at the conclusion of the book, I felt as though Elena should have had him work harder to earn her forgiveness.
I’ve already done a little sneak peeking and book 2 will be out the following year, and I can’t wait to see what Giselle’s journey will be like!! Even though the humour is the primary reason why this book is one of my favourites of the year, it is still one of my top picks overall.
