Samarth Ramdas, also known as Sant Ramdas, Ramdas Swami, or just Ramdas, was an Indian Hindu saint, philosopher, poet, writer, and spiritual master who was Chatrapati Shivaji’s teacher. Narayan was his previous name. He was a Hindu devout follower of Rama and Hanuman.
Life
Ramdas, or Narayan, was born on the day of Rama Navami in 1608 in Jamb, a village in the present-day Jalna district of Maharashtra. Suryajipanta and Ranubai Thosar raised him in a Deshastha Rigvedi Brahmin family. Surya, the Vedic solar deity, was his father’s deity. Gangadhar, his older brother, was his only sibling. Narayan’s father died when he was just seven years old. After the death of his father, it is thought that Narayan became an introvert and was frequently observed thinking about the divine.
According to legend, Narayan ran away from his wedding ceremony after hearing a pundit chant the word ‘Saavdhan!’ (Warning!) during a traditional Hindu wedding ritual. He is said to have walked to Panchavati, a Hindu holy village near Nashik, when he was twelve years old. He later relocated to Taakli, which is located near Nashik. He spent the next twelve years at Taakli as an ascetic in total devotion to Rama, most likely between 1621 and 1633. He followed a strict daily schedule at this time, devoting the most of his time to meditation, devotion, and exercise. At the age of 24, he is said to have reached enlightenment. Around this time, he changed his name to Ramdas. Later, he had a Hanuman idol installed at Taakli.

Samarth Ramdas Story
Chhatrapati After hearing about Samarth Ramdas Swami’s popularity, Shivaji Maharaj was very excited to pay him a visit. As a result, he resolved to meet Him at Kondhaval chasm. Shivaji Maharaj arrived and waited till the dark, but he was unable to meet Swamiji. Maharaj came to Pratapgad later, and even while sleeping, the prospect of meeting Samarth Ramdas Swami kept circling in his head. Actually, Samarth Ramdas Swami avoided Shivaji Maharaj on purpose. A few days went by in the same fashion. One day, Shivaji Maharaj’s desire to meet Samarth grew so strong that he went to Bhavani Devi’s temple and fell asleep in front of the Devi. That night, he saw Samarth Ramdas Swami in a vision, dressed in paduka (wooden shoes), a saffron robe, a Japmala (chanting beads) in His hand, and a crutch under His armpit. Shivaji Maharaj paid respect to Samarth Ramdas Swami by bowing down to Him. Ramdas Swami blessed Maharaj by placing His hand on his head. When Maharaj awoke in the morning, he discovered that he was holding a coconut as a sacrament. Shivaji Maharaj began to accept Samarth Ramdas Swami as his Guru on that day.
Later, Shivaji Maharaj performed more acts of bravery, and Samarth Ramdas Swami himself visited Maharaj in Shinganwadi. Samarth presented Maharaj with a coconut, a fistful of dirt, horse manure, and pebbles as a sacrament for performing ritualistic worship of the Guru’s feet. Shivaji Maharaj considered quitting his kingdom and dedicating the rest of his life to helping Samarth. When Samarth realised what he was thinking, he said Maharaj, “O King, pursue the path of Kshatriya (Warrior) Dharma.” Even if it means your life, do not abandon your Dharma. You were born to defend your people. Do not entrust this to my care. Even if you only remember me, I will come to meet you. “Let pleasure and ecstasy reign in your kingdom.” Later, Samarth taught Shivaji Maharaj how to run a kingdom in the best possible way. Shivaji Maharaj was given a coconut by Samarth for his well-being. Shivaji Maharaj began his reign joyfully and contentedly. As previously stated, Samarth had handed Shivaji Maharaj a mouthful of mud, horse manure, and pebbles as a sacrament. For Maharaj, muck represented earth, stones meant conquering hill forts, and horse manure symbolised a wealthy army of horses. Shivaji Maharaj was never short of anything thanks to the Guru’s blessings.
Samarth was highly proud of Shivaji Maharaj’s task of eliminating the foreign enemy and restoring self-rule. He used to preach to the people about how they should assist Shivaji Maharaj in this noble mission and how they should get strength to struggle for self-rule and Dharma preservation. Samarth was completely trusted by Shivaji Maharaj. Maharaj used to consult Samarth Ramdas Swami and seek his guidance and blessings on numerous occasions. The Holy text ‘Dasbodh’ contains Samarth’s sermon to Maharaj on how to behave with prudence in times of tragedy. ‘Always be cautious,’ Samarth advises. Have the ability to tell the difference between a friend and an enemy. Plans must be created only after careful thought in isolation. Make consistent efforts at all times. Earlier heroes faced numerous challenges. Always be on the go, without becoming bored, losing hope, or gaining a lot of new friends.’
Samarth Ramdas Miracle
Ramdas learned some Hindu scriptures as a child and developed an interest in meditation and religious study. He locked himself in a room one day and began to ponder on God. Ramdas replied that he was thinking and praying for the world’s good when his mother asked what he was doing. His mother was startled and pleased by the boy’s early religious devotion.
All of the arrangements for Ramdas’ marriage were arranged when he was twelve years old. He took a seat directly in front of the bride. Between the bridegroom and the bride, there was a screen. Ramdas rushed away from the spot and vanished in the blink of an eye when the priests sang “Sawadhan!” (be alert).
