About The Author John Boyne
The individual’s place of birth is Dublin, Ireland, where they pursued a course of study in English Literature at Trinity College, Dublin, and subsequently engaged in the study of Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia, Norwich. In the year 2015, I had the privilege of receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of East Anglia (UEA).
The author has a notable publication record, consisting of 14 books targeting adult audiences, 6 novels tailored for younger readers, and a compilation of short stories. The novel titled “The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas” achieved the prestigious distinction of being a New York Times bestseller, attaining the top position on the esteemed list. This literary work garnered significant popularity and recognition, leading to its adaptation into many artistic mediums, including a feature film, a play, a ballet, and an opera. The widespread appeal of this narrative resulted in the sale of around 11 million copies across the globe.

The novel titled “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas” might be characterised as a straightforward yet impactful narrative with fable-like qualities. The text was brief, yet it left a lasting impression on me, provoking continued contemplation. Undoubtedly, this literary work evokes strong emotional responses. While engaging with the text, I experienced a sensation of constriction in the throat, which persisted throughout a significant section of the reading, particularly towards the conclusion.
John Boyne effectively evoked a renewed perspective of perceiving the world from the vantage point of a young and inexperienced nine-year-old, characterised by innocence, curiosity, and a thirst for knowledge. The author employed repetitive use of several phrases and sentences, such “Out-With” and “The Fury,” which served to imbue words that inherently lack innocence with a sense of childhood naivety. The narrative significantly improved upon the establishment of a friendship between Bruno, the protagonist, and Shmuel, a young boy residing beyond the confines of the “fence” while donning striped pyjamas.
Bruno expressed certainty in his observation that he had never encountered a youngster as emaciated or despondent as the one before him, prompting him to conclude that engaging in conversation with him was imperative.
Boyne effectively establishes tension throughout the narrative, with one notable instance being the kitchen scene with Shmuel, Bruno, and the malevolent Lieutenant Kotler. The book evoked feelings of uneasiness and a growing sense of doom. I experienced emotional distress whenever individuals such as Shmuel or Pavel were referenced. I found myself contemplating the background of Pavel in particular.
