The Final Word:
Holy cow! This is a fantastic book. Julia Quinn did it again with Anthony, the eldest of the Bridgerton ‘children.’ He was the hero I hated in the first chapter and the one I loved at the end.
Anthony has accepted the inevitable, given the premature deaths of his father (at age 38) and uncle. This is why he has spent his whole life distant from everyone except his mother and siblings. As his 30th birthday approaches, he makes the decision to settle down with a wife and start a family. However, since he is aware (or at least assumes) that he will die at a young age, he has decided to select a bride with whom he is absolutely confident he will never fall in love. This is where he finally drove me completely bonkers. The thesaurus entry for the term “martyr” would include Anthony Bridgerton as an alternate entry. I wanted him to go play in a heather field full of bees at one point. I feel bad, it was harsh, since towards the conclusion of the book I wanted to take him in and make him feel loved.
Overall, I preferred The Viscount Who Loved Me to The Duke and I because I found Daphne’s story to be flat and lacking in depth. Anthony and Kate Sheffield are such richly layered protagonists that I found myself yearning to know them on a deeper level, to experience their emotions—fear, rage, longing—through their eyes.Thanks to Julia Quinn’s skillful character development, I was able to do so, and in doing so I grew to care for both protagonists and root for their “happily ever after.”
